Nu, so my computer's in the shop, which mean I now have my daddy's big clunky spare. Better than nothing, I suppose.

Well, in any case, I need advice. I'm looking to buy a good but affordable portable GPS system. This will be crucial for driving around Mass and Albany. But I'm dealing with a college student's budget, and I don't know yet what my job will be like. Any suggestions from anyone who has a system or knows anything about them?

Edit: When I say affordable, I mean the cheapest I can get one for. I'm quite aware they're expensive, I'm just looking for least so, that still does a decent job

Magellion would be best, but i'm not sure on its cheapness.

I got a Mio C310X for $200 at Circuit City. Not sure if they're still running the deal or not (it's $300 normally; I bought it during an online-only special where you had to go pick it up at the store after paying online).

All in all, I've been happy with it. The map isn't all it could be (the worst part about it is it doesn't know which turns off Memorial Drive are legal and which aren't), but it does a good job recalculating the route if you diverge. For the money, I haven't seen anything better.

Better off buying $30 worth of maps and 2 hours of time figuring out how to read them.

But that's me, and I have a really good sense of direction, and have been known to go driving without maps before, if I know the end points well enough. I wander my way through the middles.

Well, I'm good with maps and all, but it's hard to be looking at one while driving by yourself on the highway and forgetting what exit you need.

Affordable portable GPS system? You are so wacky. Newegg.com and Circuitcity.com each have a few options for $200, but I'm not sure how good they are.

Additionally, there Microsoft Streets & Trips 2007 with GPS Locator, which turns your laptop into a GPS for $130, but I think it's PC only.

If $200 is in your budget, a friend of mine had this one and I have the next version up and I've been very happy with the brand.

Can you ask him for me if you/how you can update it? Or answer as to your version? (which version do you have, btw?)

I'd have to check about the version I have when I get home, but they can be updated via usb by connecting them to a PC (probably a mac as well). I've never needed to update mine, though.
