LARPERCALIA!

I am soooooo excited for this years Festival of the LARPs.
Here's what I'll be doing:

The Prince Comes of Age:
Caryn, the newest member of the Famous Fairview Five. That's right, I'm the one in the cursed slot. So wish me luck! Also, this game is the reason I'm coming to Larpercalia.

Browncoats: Whiskey Burkle, the pilot of Mingyun

Ruins of Grandeur: Rick Miller, a museum curator. I get to use every piece of archaeological knowledge I have, and every bit of knowledge about museum set up. Which is actually more than you might think.

Better Off Dead: Nefretari, the gorgeous foreign exchange student from Egypt. I get to bring back my Arabic accent and less than perfect grasp of English. Yay!

Sunday: Pinch Hitting for whatever.

Can't wait to see you all!!!

Reunions test run plea

So, I know this is all ridiculously short notice.

Before I can run Reunions as part of research, I need to make sure it works as a LARP. It's looking like this Sunday, the 13th, may be the only time I can actually do this any time soon. Which is also PAX.
So, this is an emergency call. I need just two more players, but one needs to be a guy and the other has to be okay with crosscasting. I also wouldn't mind more signups than that, since all the other 4 are also part of the group willing to be in the research. (also, I am, of course, still taking regular signups for the game)

I also need a place to run. This is a one room game, and as it takes place in a hotel room and then a room in a home, and is only a 6 player game, all I need is one room for about 5 hours, and it requires very little setup.
The play test will not be part of the research itself, so there will be no video cameras, no consent forms, no using any results as part of my paper.

If you think you can do it, please please please sign up at http://www.journeysurveys.com/answer/276.

Note: this is the same questionnaire as for the normal runs, so there will be questions about consent and such on it. If all you want to do is the playtest, just make sure you only note Sunday the 13th in the logistics page as when you can do it, and don't agree to being videotaped.

For those who missed it before, here's the blurb:

It’s been about five years since you all started at Franklin University, four since you all joined Franklin’s Sci-Fi fantasy club, the FORCe. It’s been a year since graduation. A year since you were all able to really spend time together. This weekend is a time to get together, to catch up, and to enjoy.

Reunions is a series of two reunions for six college friends, set six months apart. One takes place Friday night of a three day Star Wars con, in a hotel room, as everyone catches up and figures out plans for the rest of the con. The other takes place at one character’s birthday party. Each game is two hours long, and will be separated by a break (probably a food break). By signing up for one game, you are signing up for both.

Reunions is an experimental LARP, in all meanings of the word. It is also a serious game, taking place in the real world. This is not a typical Sharone game, please do not expect GM Space or 36 Degrees of Separation. All situations and plots in the game are based on the types of situations we have all been through with our close friends, and therefore players will likely find themselves in scenarios that are very familiar. It is also very high characterization, with very few actual set goals, and next to no mechanics.

Reunions (A Shameless Plea for Science!)

It’s been about five years since you all started at Franklin University, four since you all joined Franklin’s Sci-Fi fantasy club, the FORCe. It’s been a year since graduation. A year since you were all able to really spend time together. This weekend is a time to get together, to catch up, and to enjoy.

Reunions is an experimental LARP, in all meanings of the word. That is, the game itself is experimental, and it is an experiment. The game is set up for research in linguistic anthropology--how the way people talk and who they are go together. In other words, I am not studying LARPing, I am using LARPing to study something for linguistic anthropology. For full details about the game itself and the questionnaire, go to http://www.journeysurveys.com/answer/276

This is the game I plugged at Intercon closing ceremonies, for those who were there.

Thank you all for helping me make my research happen!

Also, if you have any ideas for other good places to plug this, please let me know.

February visit

Okay, so, I need to start solidifying February plans, since it's a long enough period of time.
Currently, it looks like I'll be coming into the area sometime on Saturday the 19th. I'll be leaving early afternoon Sunday the 27th.
Things planned so far:
Two dinners with friends sometime over the week, days to be determined.
If there is a BURG Wednesday (since I believe Brandeis has a week long break) I'd like to be there. If.
Hopefully BSCF on Thursday.
Friday night Rocky Horror in Foxboro.
Party on Saturday.

I have places to stay so far on the night of Friday the 25th, and then on Saturday the 26th.
I could really use some more plans, I would love to see more people, and I could use crash space, especially as I don't wanna impose on anyone too long.

So, help?

So, it seems that I will not be able to run my game in February....I just discovered I have to finish EVERYTHING before I can even submit the IRB forms. This means my entire games, casting questionnaires, game blurbs, consent forms, exit questionnaires, EVERYTHING. If I can finish everything in time and hear back? I'll fall over in shock. This...well, kinda sucks. I will be talking to my professor and seeing if I can find some way to submit without finishing everything, but it seems unlikely.

I will still be visiting, however. This means I may actually have extra time to hang out, I hope to get to the hot foods party, and I want to see as many people as I can. But, oof. IRBs SUCK.

LARPing in February?

So, in my previous post, I mentioned the weekend of Feb 25-27. Turns out, the IRB forms, once I get them done, have a turnaround of up to 20 business days. So hopefully I'll be able to run by then, but I may not. So eek.
In any case, once again, it looks like I'm gonna be looking into coming for the week of Feb 20 as well, coming in some time that weekend and staying 'till Sunday the 27th. Friday the 25th I'd like to get to Foxboro for RKO Army's Rocky Horror.
So, anywho, I'd like to couch surf for the week or something, and see as many people as I can. Who's up for it?
Also, if you're up for taking part in the LARPs themselves, please comment on my previous post.

Possible first date for running

So,I'm currently looking into the weekend of Feb 25th-27th. My plans would be to stop by UMass Amherst to meet up with someone, shoot a cameo for one of the reviewers on thatguywiththeglasses.com, have dinner there, then head to RKO Army's Digital Game show of Rocky Horror in Foxboro. From there, I'd be looking for somewhere I could stay that night (unless I can stay with a cast member I know, but that's less likely). Also, somewhere to stay Saturday night.

I'd be hoping to do at least one run, possibly two. Again, this would be a set of two two hour games. My preference would be to run game number 1 twice Saturday, number 2 twice Sunday. Otherwise, Run one set Sat, one set Sunday, but with an hour in between the two games for lunch or food or something.

Would anyone be able by any chance to offer up a room for the game? Otherwise, I'll look into running at Brandeis.
Also, as a reminder, it's a 6 person game, so I'm looking for 6 or 12 people who can do this weekend.

So, who'd be able to play? Would you be able to do the two different days, or would it have to be one day? Would anyone be able to host me/the game? And would anyone be interested in going to that Rocky Horror with me/meeting me there?

Edit: it looks like I have the entire week before this off as well. This may mean I need to do a much longer visit....which may also mean more freedom in scheduling the game...and way more hanging out time

Edit the second: This is the LARP for research. More info will come as I finish it. Right now, I can tell it is a game taking place in the real world amongst a small group of friends. There will be a consent form thingy to be signed before the game and an exit questionnaire as well.

LARPing as research

So, many of you saw my recent posts proclaiming that I will be using LARPing for my research. My biggest worry about this: What will other linguists and anthropologists think? I've been slightly worried that the second I say I used Live Action Role Playing for my experiment, my audience will stop listening, and no matter how good my analysis, no one will be willing to actually believe it.
What I've found while here at the Linguistic Society of America conference is really reassuring. When I start to explain I'm planning on using LARPing, I get one of two reactions: from a small number of people, I've gotten immediate interest; from most people, I get an answer or an expression that I know means "what the hell are you thinking." As I start to explain, I start to get nods, and a reaction that lets me know they're following my logic and starting to get it. By the time I finish, I've been getting a "Oh, cool, I really want to hear what happens," or some other similar reaction that proves they've not only been convinced, but think it might really work and provide some really interesting data.
So yay!
Now I just have to worry about passing my comprehensive exams. Eek!

So it's official. Come next semester, I'll be writing two LARPs, and running them multiple times. Playing in one means playing in the other, but both are only going to be 1-2 hours, 4-6 players. If you play, you'll basically be playing the same character in both. If you play, you'll also be acknowledging the fact that the game will be videotaped, and I'll be using the data I collect in order to hopefully make some very interesting discoveries in the field of linguistic anthropology. I will need a minimum of 32 players, (probable)maximum of 60, depending on number of players I choose, and number of runs I do. I'll be running mostly in the Troy area, I believe, but at some point I'll be scheduling a number of weekends to come to the Brandeis area to run. Meaning I'll need places to run.

So, all of this is way in the planning stages, more info to come later, but I am uber excited. I get to use something I love to study my passion, and hopefully get to interact with great friends.

So, I hope I've whetted your appetites. This should be awesome.

LARPing: a Study

So, it looks like I really am going to be using LARPing for my research into Linguistic Anthropology. Not only am I starting to get at some points that are interesting, I'm really getting my advisor to see what I'm getting at as well. This makes me happier than I can begin to describe. This also means, that if I'm extremely lucky, I can start going to more LARPing events because in a way it will all be research.
Now, I was curious. Since, most likely, whatever research I actually do will involve writing/running LARPs, how many of you would be willing to take part, knowing I'd be using this in a hopefully to be published long term study? Also, who might I be able to call on in the future to actually help me write some of these things, seeing as while I'm a decent writer--especially of characters--I'm not so good at coming up with plot by myself?

So, I'm in major training mode. I get to be in training for 9-10 hours each day now. I'm learning loads, seem to be taking it in, doing well on the quizzes that seem to be there mostly to make sure we're on track and understanding, and participating well in conference calls.
But the hours are brutal for me.
So, my question is, those of you who had to go to a work schedule from a college/grad schedule, what did you do? After not having to be up until 11 at the earliest, 2 at the latest this past semester, my body is not ready to go to bed at midnight, but I need to be up each morning at 8:30.
So, suggestions majorly appreciated.

Suggestions please!

So, I've mentioned my clay miniatures before. These are the miniature foods I make out of sculpy, with the scale being such that a "large" four layer cake will sit on a plate about the size of a quarter. Well, now I'm working on creating a rather large stash, with a good variety of clay miniatures and devil/satyr horns, with plans to see about getting a table at the artist's alley at Genericon with a friend.
The thing is, that on top of just plain miniatures, I've started making them into earrings and necklaces. And I need suggestions.
As examples, some of what I've made or have plans to make so far: )
So, yeah. I need more ideas, especially for stud earrings. So, help? Please?
Suggestions that I like and manage to make work will probably result in receiving a version of your idea made into a necklace, dangly earrings, or stud earrings (your choice) as thanks!

Anyways, yeah. That's my general state of confusion. I'm okay for the first time in my life with being almost single (I have two long distance relationships right now, far more casual things). I guess I'm not really asking for advice, but sorta am, but am not....
Yeah.

Summer plans

So, this summer I have a pretty intense job that will leave me with little time for fun visits....
However, the training is mostly online, schedules, and phoned, and I have a few breaks during that time.
So, here's the days I am totally free this summer:
May 29-31 (Sat-Mon)
June 3-4 (Thurs-Fri)
June 9-10 (Wedns-Thurs)
June 14 (Mon)
June 17-18 (Thurs-Fri)
and then later,
July 3-5 (Sat-Mon)

Days where I have training that can be done from mostly anywhere as long as I has internets and space:
May 24-28, June 1-2, June 11-13, and June 15-16. Training these days apparently: All phases of the training program involve a full day of study following a specific agenda. A typical training day lasts from 9am - 6pm, with a scheduled lunch break.

After that, I start work, and will be working 4-5 days a week, with my off days likely to not be in a row or be weekends, but I will certainly be trying to find more dates to visit. In the meantime, the above is when I will be trying to work things out to at least visit some of those periods.

The colors of my life

The idea is, comment here and I will give you a color. Then, in your journal, list ten things you love that are that color.
I commented on [livejournal.com profile] zombie_dog's, thinking this would be pretty fun...and got yellow. Eek.
So, what do I love that's yellow?
This is gonna be way harder than I expected.
1. The sun.
2. Buttercups. I have some fun memories about those flowers.
3. Pomellos are often yellow, I suppose. My favorite citrus. Hard to find good ones outside of Israel, though.
4. Scrambled eggs with cheese are yummy....
Gosh, this is hard.
5. Oh! The program book thingy for the Linguistic Society of America conference was yellow, I think!
Um...
6. There are some very pretty yellow butterflies
Jeez, it's much easier to think of yellow things I hate.
*Looks around the room, sees nohing but a broken flashlight*
*Does an image search on google*
I guess I can list things I like....
7. Sunflowers give sunflower seeds....
8. Lemons can be good, I guess...
9. yellow....yellow....um...um...um...oooo! Wait, no, that's orange. Um....
I guess my cyberfalls have a bunch of yellow....
*walks through her house*
Okay, that's it. I give up meme! You win!
....anyone have a suggestion for number ten? (Note, a response will get you a color...)

Edit: 10. Smiley faces!
